A day in Nanomate’s laboratories

In this article we tell you all about the day-to-day work in our laboratories, where each day is a different challenge. This allows us to improve and perfect our techniques, as well as to learn and discover new processes and advances in different areas.

 

At Nanomate, we embrace innovation and efficiency in our daily operations. The implementation of agile methodologies and the Scrum framework has redefined how we approach tasks, allowing for greater division of responsibilities, more effective leadership, and better integration across various roles within our company.  

Focusing on the daily operations of our researchers and lab personnel, we start the morning with a daily meeting involving all teams. In this brief discussion, we summarize the previous day, address potential obstacles, and distribute tasks for the day ahead. 

This 15-minute meeting for each team covers day-to-day matters without delving into specific details. More technical meetings, goal-setting, result presentations, and discussions are held once a week in what we call "weekly" meetings. 

The Data team, aligned with Nanomate's significant digitalization process, focuses on the implementation and advancements in Big Data, Business Intelligence and the application of Artificial Intelligence. This team is dedicated to storing, extracting, analyzing, and visualizing data using tools such as AWS, DataBricks and PowerBI. Understanding the needs of each team is crucial to keep fostering a data-based culture. As we like to say: “No data, no company”. 

In the Nano department, we concentrate on synthesizing different catalysts to obtain new nanomaterials, always aligned with the needs of our in-house Smart Materials and Energy teams. These syntheses are carried out on a small scale, in our laboratories, with highly controlled conditions. Industrial scaling is crucial for us, and we keep this in mind at every step of the process. 

After laboratory tests, we scale the syntheses while trying to maintain the previous small-scale conditions. This allows us to increase production levels and observe how our catalysts perform on a “large scale”. Thorough characterization of all products, in collaboration with the Quality department, is conducted using various techniques such as BET, SEM, RAMAN, Electrical Conductivity, Picnometry, among others.  

Day by day, we maintain close communication with the Energy and Smart Materials departments. With the Energy team, we actively collaborate to study the influence of nanofibers on improving the properties of battery and supercapacitor inks. With our Smart Materials colleagues, we explore the types of fibers that enhance mechanical, thermal, and adhesive properties, among others, in a wide variety of materials, from thermosetting resins and thermoplastics to construction materials.
